8. Set up your chart

Translation under review. The illustrations are still in Portuguese.

A charting platform screen set to the 1D timeframe, with three numbered items: 1, the candles; 2, the averages EMA 20 (the calm one, yellow) and EMA 12 (the fast one, blue); 3, the RSI (14) with the 30 and 70 levels. Volume is crossed out: only three things on screen.

The same chart as the book. Every figure in this book has three things: candles, the moving average and the . In this chapter you make your chart match. Any charting platform will do. There are several free ones, on computer and on phone, and almost all of them have these three tools.

Step 1: open the chart. Open your charting platform. In the search, type the name of the index you want to follow and open the chart.

Step 2: candles. Check that the chart is in candles. If it's in line or bars, switch to candles in the chart type menu.

Step 3: the moving average. Open the indicators menu and search for exponential moving average (). Add it and, in the settings, set the period to 20.

Add the moving average again and set the period to 12, with a different color. Now you have both: the 20, calmer, and the 12, faster (chapter 5 explains).

Step 4: the RSI. In the same menu, search for RSI (Relative Strength Index) and add it. It shows up in a separate panel, below the candles. Leave the default period, 14.

Step 5: remove the rest. If the chart came with volume or other indicators, remove them. In this book the screen has only three things.

Step 6: save. Save this layout. Every time you open a new chart, it comes already set up.

Switch the magnifying glass. Above the chart are the timeframes: 1 min, 5 min, 15 min, 1 h, 4 h, 1 day, 1 week. That's where you switch magnifying glasses. The moving average and the RSI adjust on their own.
